ADN 311: Photography 1 / Digital Imaging

Course Description

The first part of the course covers various forms of illustrative and self-expressive photography, including independent art, documentary, and fashion photography. It emphasizes a holistic approach, covering aesthetic, theoretical, and practical aspects. The practical assignments aim to improve theoretical knowledge and practical skills, covering digital and analog darkroom techniques, pinhole cameras, film development, and printing. The course also delves into the technical functions of cameras, digital editing and manipulation techniques, aesthetics, and the design of photographic images. Additionally, it includes the study of black-and-white photography and creation of a self-made pinhole camera.

The second part focuses on developing students’ artistic intentions by exploring video and intermedial techniques. It aims to help students critically evaluate the effectiveness of video images and sequences in representing different interpretations of the world. Video, film, and short videos are highly relevant to students’ lives and influence their perception of the world. The course covers various techniques such as experiments, collage, stop-motion, slow-motion, and projection options, including different surfaces and projection methods.

Learning Outcomes

Students develop a foundation in the history of photography, photographic techniques and studio photography.  Students will gain knowledge and practice in art photography and develop practical skills in advertising and fashion photography. Students will improve their photographic skills, either technical or compositional. At the end of the semester, students will produce a professional portfolio and gain experience making still photos for films.  

This class is recommended to College of Design students. Students coming from other colleges will be asked to submit a portfolio of their past work.

Previous experience in the field of art and design is required, this class may be too difficult and demanding for students with a limited skill set.
